On May 29, 2012 Annals of Internal Medicine published a review of the use of synthetic estrogen and progesterone in women. The synthetic progesterone is known as a progestin. When the estrogen and progestin were used together the risk of breast cancer increased by about 25%. When estrogen was used alone the risk of breast cancer decreased by about 25%. This combination also doubled the risk for dementia. If you are on hormonal replacement therapy (HRT) please, for your health sake, check and see if it is a estrogen/progestin combination.
